Calabria Wine Pairing Dinner
We are delighted to invite you to a special evening of fine dining and exceptional wines at Rafagino.
This month’s wine dinner will take place on Sunday, August 30th, featuring the Italian region of Calabria. Calabria, the “toe of Italy’s boot,” is a picturesque region in southern Italy with mountains, beautiful beaches and fantastic simple food. It is lapped by the splendid crystal blue waters of the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas and separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina. The warm climate, the beautiful colors of the sea, rocky coasts that alternate with sandy beaches, a wild and mysterious nature, the strong and genuine flavors of local food and the vestiges of its ancient origins make Calabria a unique place. Its most famous cities are Catanzaro (regional capital), Reggio Calabria, Cosenza, Crotone, and Vibo Valentia. The cuisine is a typical southern Italian Mediterranean cuisine with a balance between meat-based dishes (pork, lamb), vegetables (especially eggplant), and fish (mostly swordfish, tuna & baccala). Pasta is also very important in Calabria. Its famous wines include the whites Greco Bianco and Trebbiano and the reds Ciro (oldest continuously produced wine in the world; it used to be offered to the winners of the ancient Olympics), Greco Nero and Gagliopo based wines.
